Identification of Lactobacilli from Deep Carious Lesions by Means of Species-Specific PCR and MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry

2014

SUMMARY Background: The aim of the present study was to compare MALDI-TOF results for the identification of 87 lactobacilli, isolated from soft or hard carious dentin from 70 first molars of 7- to 8-year-old children with those obtained by species-specific PCR. Methods: The 87 isolates were analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS (Microflex LT, MALDI Biotyper 3.0, Bruker Daltonik, Bremen, Germany), using a reference data base of 4110 strains including > 90 lactobacillus species. For the identification with species-specific PCR, oligonucleotide primers (16S rRNA) specific for L. casei, L. paracasei, L. rhamnosus, L. gasseri, L. plantarum, and L. acidophilus were used; type strains served as controls. The P…

Dentist´s knowledge, attitudes and determining factors of the conservative approach in teeth with reversible pulpitis and deep caries lesions

2018

Background The aim of this study was to investigate dentists` knowledge, attitudes and factors regarding the conservative approach in the management of deep caries lesions (DCLs) in teeth with reversible pulpitis. Material and methods 187 dentists were contacted directly or by mail, and 125 (67%) were finally included in the study. Dentists were requested to answer an open/discursive questionnaire about the routine approach to the diagnosis and treatment of DCLs, including knowledge-related attitudinal items. Results Total caries excavation was the preferred treatment option for more than 80% of dentists in case of DCL with reversible pulpitis. Only a small percentage (8%) chose partial car…

Effect of silver diamine fluoride on the bond durability of normal and carious dentin

2019

Background Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) has attracted attention because of its clinical success in arresting dentin caries. It has been shown that it can inhibit matrix metalloproteinases and cysteine cathepsins. These two properties might be beneficial in bonding to caries-affected dentin (CAD). Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of SDF on the durability and bond strength to the CAD. Material and Methods Forty-eight third molars with occlusal caries were used. The roots were cut, and the occlusal enamel was removed. The CAD area surrounded by the normal dentin (ND) was exposed. All the specimens were bonded with an etch-and-rinse adhesive, but half of them were t…
